In Short Agadir is not your average large Moroccan city. Having been completely rebuilt in the 1960s, it is a modern, Euro-heavy beach city. But, even if its membership to the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World invites comparisons to Puerto Vallarta and Halong Bay, a place like Agadir could not exist in any other country than Morocco. With near boundless golden sand beaches, 340 days of sun a year, multiple lush gardens, the country’s largest souk, and the world’s oldest sardine fishery, Agadir is well worth the trip south. As the unofficial Amazigh capital, Agadir also hosts a number of cultural festivals throughout the year. Highlights Second to the beaches, which are Agadir’s number one attraction, is the hilltop Oufella Kasbah, which affords a wonderful view of the underlying bay. This kasbah can be seen from anywhere in the city at night because of its enormous, neon sign that reads “God, Country, King” in Arabic. At the foot of the kasbah is a brand new marina complete with a luxury shopping area. This entire coastal area was recently redeveloped as part of a city beautification effort. There is now a dazzling promenade lining the beach with an array of restaurants and European style cafés. The prime area, however, is the new city center, which is the busiest, containing the main boulevards, the Valley of Birds Zoo, and the grand theater. Other worthwhile places are the The Souk el Had, which is the largest market in Morocco, and the Nouveau Talborjt, which houses the Mohammed V Mosque, the Olhao Gardens, the Zaydoun Gardens, and a good selection of restaurants. If you have extra time, you can stroll on over to La Medina, which is a model of the traditional Moroccan old town done in the Amazigh style by Italian artists. Special Events Agadir’s premier event is the Timitar Festival of Amazigh Music, held in July. Also in July are the Art of the Streets Festival of Break Dancing and Hip-hop and the Festival of Laughter. If you’re not lucky enough to make it in July, you can still try for the Festival of Films for Everyone, the Festival of Market Art, the Surf and Body Boarding Competition in May, the Honey Festival in June, the Festival of Cinema and Migration in September, the Concert for Tolerance and the Amazigh Film Festival in October, or the International Documentary Film Festival (FIDADOC) in November.
