In Short Ouarzazate (pronounced Warzazat) means the noiseless city in Amazigh because, unlike the other regional capitals in Morocco, it is laid back and tranquil. Situated on a 3,800ft plateau at the southern foot of the High Atlas Mountains, this “Gateway to the Desert” looks like an enormous kasbah sculpted out of the golden sands that surround it. Home to one of the world’s largest film studios, Essaouira has been immortalized in such films as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, The Man Who Would Be King, and Babel. James Bond even visited once, shooting the desert scenes for The Living Daylights. Essaouira is often used as a travel base because of its proximity to historical landmarks and travel-friendly villages.
Highlights Lacking a spectacular medina and the rest of the typical landmarks of a regional capital, Ouarzazate’s highly successful tourism industry depends on the city’s natural beauty, its sense of relaxation, its kasbahs, and, of course, Atlas Film Studio, which is open for tours. The 17th century Taourirt Kasbah is one of the most impressive examples of Amazigh architecture, and the hilltop Tifoultout Kasbah ruins make for good exercise and a wonderful view.
Special Events Ourzazate hosts the Azalay African Music Festival in April and the National Festival of Ahwach to celebrate Amazigh music and culture every September.
Day trips from Ouarzazate Ouarzazate makes a great southern travel base because of its central positioning. Our itineraries typically use the city as a middle point between Tinghir and Taroudant, stopping by the small villages of El Kelaa, Skoura, and Ait Ben Haddou. It also makes a great connection with Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou. Any of these villages are suitable for day excursions, as they are very close to Essaouira. If you have questions about scheduling trips to these villages, or any not mentioned, one of our representatives will be happy to assist you.
